 Who Am I?

My monologue is said by Juliet Capulet from Romeo and Juliet. She is a 13-year-old girl and will be turning 14 very soon. She is brown-haired, brown-eyed, and average. She was beautiful and pure. She got an education since she was only 13 years old. She is in love with Romeo Montague who is her family rival meaning her parents won’t approve of her love. Her parents since they are royalty want Juliet to marry a prince which she is against since she found her true love. She is strong-headed but undermined by the people around her. She is passionate about her love for Romeo. 

What time is it?

This story takes place in the 14th century. Juliet’s birthday was July 31 and it was soon in the book. So it takes place in summer. The monologue takes place late at night. The whole story only takes place of only 4 days overall. So Romeo and Juliet fall in love, get married, Romeo kills her cousin, Romeo gets sent away, Juliet fakes her death, Romeo kills himself to be with Juliet and then Juliet kills herself to be with him all in 4 days. The fact that it took a short period for all this to happen shows how immature and unrealistic their true love was.

Where am I?

Romeo and Juliet take place in Verona, Italy. Juliet lives with her parents in a big house with nurses and servants. This monologue takes place on her balcony outside her bedroom window. It is dark outside as well. 

What is surrounding me?

She is on her balcony and Romeo was listening to her discuss her love for him and now he is below the balcony talking to her. She is outside her bedroom on her balcony. It is warm outside since it is the middle of summer. 

What are the given circumstances?

Juliet has just met Romeo and has fallen in love with him. He is the family rival so she is struggling with the conflict of loving him. She is wishing that he wasn’t her rival. He had been listening and then revealed that he was listening to her and she is embarrassed. She realized she confessed her feelings for him and is blushing but she is upfront about it and just asks him if he truly loves her and is not lying. In the future, they secretly date which then leads to a secret wedding. Romeo later kills her cousin and is sent away and she fakes her death so she doesn’t get forced into a marriage and to run away with Romeo but Romeo kills himself for her and then Juliet kills herself to be with Romeo.

Juliet’s relationship with her parents was good until she is against her forced wedding. Juliet’s relationship with Romeo is strong and romantic. Her relationship with nurse is very sweet. Nurse is like a mother to her. She was very close with her cousin as well.

What do I want?

Juliet’s goal in the monologue is to get Romeo to tell her if he truly loves her. Her feelings were revealed and she wasn’t going to deny it. She just wants Romeo to know she loves him and she is truly in love. She wants to know what Romeo thinks of her so they can exchange their thoughts on their love. She just wants to be with Romeo forever and be happy together.

What is in my way?

The rivalry between them is in the way. They can’t be happy and free with their feeling due to hiding their relationship. In her monologue, She shows how she wants to know if Romeo loves her and he might lie so she is nervous he is lying which is holding them back. 

What do I do to get what I want?

She asks Romeo about his love for her to find the truth. She fights her forced marriage to be with Romeo. Juliet does fake her own death to be with Romeo and even kills herself for real to be with him. She is dedicated to their love and even sneaks around with him to hide from their parents.
